Police Text Crime Away
By Brad Smith
WirelessWeek - June 15, 2007
Boston Police have found a new way to use text messaging, this time to stop crime.
In what is believed to be the first of its kind in the United States, Boston Police have teamed up with technology provider VeriSign and the Hill Holliday marketing agency to promote the use of anonymous SMS as part of the city's Crime Stoppers program.
The SMS campaign is aimed at encouraging young people to tip off the police if they see a crime happening. The text messages, sent to the short code 27463 (CRIME), are filtered through VeriSign's software so the sender remains anonymous, according to Oliver Holle, the company's vice president of mobile applications.
SMS has the advantage over placing a voice call because it can be done without arousing suspicion, Holle says. Bostonians can still call the 800 Crime Stoppers number or 911.
Boston Police came up with the idea to use SMS and sought out partners to help put it together, Holle says. Hill Holliday has donated advertising to promote the campaign.
Holle says it makes sense to use SMS in a crime-fighting campaign because texting is often the preferred method of mobile communications among young adults and teenagers. He cited a study by M:Metrics that 70 percent of young adults 18-24 and nearly 60 percent of teenagers send text messages every month.
Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis told The Boston Globe that New York City and Los Angeles have been experimenting with using SMS to 911 dispatchers but no other police department has such a comprehensive texting program.
The Boston tips require only that someone send the word "tip" to the short code. Boston police then respond to the message assuring the tipster that the messages are anonymous and ask for more information. Tipsters can respond with a single letter to designate the type of crime they have witnessed. The system is automated to ask for further details, such as time and location.
VeriSign's system assigns a randomly generated number to tipsters, which can be used to eventually contact the tipster if a reward is offered.

data access speed is getting more critical, now distance to server may determin if shares are sold profitably.
Recent events on the stock exchanges are being now reviewed by network experts, in view of physical proximity advantages. At the New York Stock Exchange, trader sharpen their target marginc on Puts and on Cals. Actual access latency, may affect at what price actual share was sold or bought and at what profit and loss. It is now forseable that major traders would start rewire their servers to shorten the way to Exchanges servers. This just a few years ago would be unbelievable, but it seem something that is coming.
A lot of people who are unemployed or disabled for one reason or another, trade their shares on internet. A week agao a Turkish taxi driver in Munich was explaining how he is going to make money using his home computer with modem. Good luck. I am sure one day he would save enough to buy himself a cab.
Below is copy of an add for trading services in Germany. It is in German.

email from Andre Somberg on Press Release from Diamond Systems
Dear Mr/Mrs Baginski,
Please note that I am not interested in your notably wrong opinion regarding the alleged human-induced earth-warming, result of the political process within the IPCC, a UN institution that is deliberately mis-informing the world with it’s pseudo-scientific reports. For your refererence, I have included a powerpoint presentation that might help you to decide for yourself that the information on which your commercial campaign is based, is a hoax that will cost billions of dollars and will cause governments to impose draconic measures on individuals and poor people to suffer because they will be coerced into using expensive technologies that are not within their reach, to name only two consequences. I am personally appalled by your shameless utilization of this political argument to increase your sales.
You can also consult the following website for more information regarding the scientific truth about the development of Earth’s temperature:

Environmentalist reaction to Diamond Systems initiative
Hi do you recall the very presentation Al Gore did while his short stay in April in Zurich.
Weeks before Jonathan Miller, Diamond Systems CEO, had announced his company support all projects that aim at improving environment to reduce pollution and carbon consumption. Jonathan wanted to level playing field that is tilted against new technologies. Jonathan offered substantial reduction in DSC systems cost to End Users and to its Partners. The Press Release was published to many thousand engineers and business people and response is overwhelming.
Not all however were positive, enclosed here is one of those in my view well meaning individuals or organization who disagree, either way for or against.
Read for yourself.

Keep the lights on
David Holcberg, Ayn Rand Institute - Irvine, Calif.
The darkness that enveloped Sydney during a recent one-hour, citywide blackout is an appropriate symbol of the philosophical meaning of environmentalism and a harbinger of the dark future we'll face if we don't reject this anti-human ideology ("Is Earth near its 'tipping points' from global warming?" Cover story, Life, Wednesday).
Environmentalism is anti-human because it places the "preservation" of nature above human survival and prosperity. Human life in our modern, industrial civilization requires the generation of enormous amounts of energy. Yet, environmentalists are ideologically opposed to all practical forms of energy production because they constitute a massive remaking of nature for the exclusive benefit of man.
Even if it were true that cutting emissions of carbon dioxide and reducing energy use would have a significant effect on the Earth's climate, that would be no excuse for the environmentalists' anti-industrial agenda.
It took humanity thousands of years of struggling to escape the misery of pre-industrial life.
If we value our lives, we must refuse to turn off the lights that illuminate our cities and our lives.

One of interesting Internet applications has just expanded. It is being written from the Swiss perspective, hence the reference to Cablecom, etc. Nevertheless, is is very positive that new and rapidly growing alternative to traditional media, whre much reduced rates of per program/minute/content. And a viewing pattern much easier to track and validate that say standard Nielsen stats.

For the chef, the investor, and the kid in you
Nine new channels
Oops - we did it again: we made Zattoo even better. Only a couple of days after releasing a Linux version, we are adding more channels to an already impressive list. The latest release brings no less than 9 new channels in the Swiss lineup to satisfy all your TV appetites:
With Al Jazeera International and France 24 you get 24-hour breaking news from around the world. CNBC Europe helps you make better investment decisions for those sweated savings. With the capital gain and the help of TV Gusto you may be finally able to cook something more elaborate than frozen pizza and Betty Bossi’s ready-made lasagne. DMAX, “TV for men”, gets you the content to go with that pizza. And WDR is for our German friends who Cablecom so badly disappointed when they removed the channel from the analog lineup.
Finally, we’ve swapped BBC Prime with ITV1, and added a layer of topping with MTV for music lovers and Super RTL for the kids and those who still feel like one.
With a total of 48 channels, spanning 5 languages and all genres, we may deserve a little rest. After all, even God did rest on the seventh day from all the work he had untertaken. But we’re workaholics indefatigable, and we’ll keep adding channels, countries, and features. So stay with us.
Good night, and good luck.

CLEAN ENERGY
Popular PC/104 I/O and CPU supplier offers steep discount for boards used in equipment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or in the development or production of clean energy
April 2, 2007. Mountain View, CA. Diamond Systems, a leader in the adaptation of low cost PC technology for use in embedded applications, announced that it will support efforts to reduce global warming and produce clean energy by making it’s technology available at a steep discount for use in applications that control or eliminate the emission of greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, or support production of clean energy from alternate sources such as wind turbines or solar cells. As part of this announcement, all Diamond Systems standard products will be available for these applications for 25% off the published quantity 1 price, regardless of volume, through June 30, 2008.
Jonathan Miller, President of Diamond Systems said “I believe it is the responsibility of each of us, especially those in the electronics industry, to contribute in our own way to an environmentally safe future for our planet. Over the past 18 years, Diamond Systems has pioneered technology to make electronic equipment smaller, more rugged and reliable and less costly. Now Diamond Systems is going one step farther to engage as a partner with equipment manufacturers in helping to save the planet.”
